I’m not even going to attempt to dissect the story or character motivations, because thinking about it is enough to make me froth at the mouth. I’d rather sit through Fifty Shades of Grey. Log Horizon S2 was a similar mess, but this is really a disaster of epic proportions. I have never been so disappointed in a sequel in my entire life. Oh, and the swordsman Shaltear frightened to death also makes an appearance. Strike three comes in the form of Ainz’s minion/butler saving a girl and getting embroiled in some kind of drama that ends with Ainz cooking up a rebellion to wrest control over the criminal underworld plaguing the kingdom. Unfortunately, I didn’t like them, and they were walking tropes I’ve seen over a million times in anime. The show tries to get us invested in the drama revolving around a seemingly sweet princess, and her peasant bodyguard. It was so boring I wanted to stab myself with a rusty spoon. Then, we get a heavy dose of Palace politics.

Ainz’s motives are so flimsy that I could sneeze, and it would collapse into dust. Right from the get go, we’re given no explanation to the introduction of the Lizardmen. The first mistake is not using the protagonist of the show as the vehicle for the viewers. It spreads the plot thin, jumping between multiple characters, trying to establish a bigger world than what Ainz is aware of. The problem lies is how many subplots the show tries to set up during the entire runtime of 13 episodes. I’ve seen better romance fanfiction, which is saying something, because I’ve read some truly terrible ones. The explanation for the Lizard tribes were ham fisted, and the ‘relationship’ between the two pivotal characters made me want to sob on the floor. There’s no rhyme or reason to that entire arc, except for the watcher to gawk at Ainz being a literal Overlord. The beginning episodes are especially terrible. Season 2 is a prime example of what happens when you write a story around characters who are so bland and uninteresting I’d rather watch paint dry.

The pacing was whack but the world building, characters, and drama was unique enough to keep me hooked. That, I feel, can be applied for season 1. If a story is bad, it has to have interesting, lovable characters that I can root for. I’m aware Overlord is originally a light novel, but oh my great lord in heaven, if it’s true, then I’m completely shocked it actually passed an editor. I am honestly curious about the original source material. The show did a terrible job of explaining anything, and it completely contradicts the image of Ainz created over the course of season 1. It was a steaming pile of crap, basically. This is my takeaway of the entire season. A whole bunch of poorly executed subplots revolving around characters I barely care to stay awake for. With such a strong groundwork in place, what the hell happened with season 2? Story I know some anime that would have killed to gain the recognition and love Overlord got. It had spotty characters and a ton of fanservice, but it was really fun and had good story to accompany epic action scenes. But I certainly didn’t expect Overlord of all anime to break that streak.īack when season 1 had just released, I binged the entire thing, like I always do.
Overlord ii anime lizard series#
Looking at the number of series I’ve reviewed since the blog’s inception, it’s extremely rare to see a bad review. Some might be completely average, but if I enjoy it, it’s time well spent. I don’t know if it’s a testament to my luck, but most anime I watch can be considered pretty good.
